About My Practice

A little about me...

I moved to Portland in the 90's and embraced a hybrid career surfacing the needs of others through community organizing, nonprofit work, teaching, and participating in the arts. Listening to and advocating for people was the way I was able to show up for my community and myself, a middle-aged, multiracial, male-presenting queer who navigates my own childhood trauma, neurodivergence, and chronic pain.

The connection I make with people in the counseling room is powerful. I provide space for clients to share their stories, their worlds, their feelings, taking opportunities to engage in deep contact so I can help them explore what feels vulnerable and important on their journey of discovery and growth.

A healing relationship is collaborative.

I know that everyone has the ability to overcome adversity, recover from trauma, build resilience, and learn to thrive in their life. Building a relationship with a therapist who provides a safe, non-judgmental space can help.

I will be here to provide a space free of shame and stigma to help you be heard and to help you hear yourself.

I have experience doing trauma-informed, co-occurring work with couples, mature & senior adults, veterans, BIPOC folks, men, clients who aren’t sure what counseling is, and the family and friends that support them.

I've worked with couples and individuals impacted by anxiety, grief, life transitions, ADHD, childhood trauma & PTSD, and addictions (substance, internet, gambling, crypto), and a general sense of being stuck.

I believe we are people of story, through our stories we can learn who we would like to be and how we would like to act.

Therapy is a process of uncovering the emotional depth of your concerns and how they affect your life holistically.

Exploring your stories will help us focus on your relationships, community, meaningful ways of being, values, and strengths that will help you make changes you want to make.

Words are not the only way to convey story. I honor the body, intuition, and chance, integrating talk therapy using an existential-narrative-gestalt lens with Depth Psychology/Shadow Work, Creative/Expressive Modalities, Parts Work, and Somatic/Embodiment therapies using a deeply humanist, decolonized practice.

What is not serving you anymore?

Often what once worked to get us through our days starts working against us. You may feel stuck - because of a rift in a relationship, crushing anxiety, grief, past trauma - and desire change but may be unsure about how to explore possible futures. You wouldn't be here if you didn't have the courage to try.

My goal is to empower you with the tools and insights you need to connect to a more fulfilling life.

I know you have it in you to grow. I know that you are the expert of your life. I know that being present in your life can increase self-compassion and give you courage to move forward. I'm here to collaborate with you, to help you connect to your partner, a future that serves you, or maybe your true self, so you can gain a renewed sense of confidence that honors your strengths and your accomplishments.

Payment

Payment is due at the time of our meeting. I accept debit or credit cards, cash, and checks as payment. I use Square to process credit cards which will securely store your credit card information.

I am not an in-network provider for any insurance company, which allows me to keep my rates reasonable. This ensures your treatment is a collaboration between us that is based on your concerns and my understanding of empirical best practices without being adjusted by an insurance company interested in cost-saving. This also protects your privacy as your symptoms and diagnosis are not shared with medical systems.

However, you may have an insurance plan that allows for out-of-network coverage. It is your responsibility to check with your insurance provider regarding out-of-network benefits as plans and benefits vary.

Checking With Your Insurance Provider

If you would like to investigate the possibility of reimbursement for out-of-network coverage, please check your policy carefully and ask your insurance provider the following questions:

  • How much does my plan cover for an out-of-network mental health provider?
  • I would like to see a therapist who is out-of-network; what is the process to obtain reimbursement for therapy with an out-of-network provider?
  • Does out-of-network therapy apply to my deductible? If so, what is my deductible and has it been met?
  • What is the coverage amount per therapy session?

I am happy to provide a “SUPERBILL” — a monthly statement including diagnostic and session information—for you to submit to your insurance.

Good Faith Estimates

Under the law, all health care providers need to give clients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the expected charges for medical services, including psychotherapy services.

You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency healthcare services, including psychotherapy services. You can ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule a service, or at any time during treatment.

If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill. Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate.

For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, or how to dispute a bill, see your Estimate, or visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises.

Cancellations

If you are unable to keep an appointment, a 24-hour cancellation notice is required or you will be charged your full session fee. This is necessary because a time commitment is made to hold your session time exclusively for you. If you are late for a session, you may lose some of that session time.

Confidentiality of Communications

I use HIPAA-compliant Gmail for email communications, Google Voice for text messages, voicemail, and phone-based therapy sessions. Video sessions are hosted through a secure client portal.

Note that although I use a HIPAA-compliant email service, confidentiality can’t be 100% guaranteed with this form of communication.

Occasionally, I may need to consult with other professionals in order to provide the best treatment for you. Information about you may be shared in this consultation context without using your name or other identifying information.

Contact Between Sessions

If you need to contact me between sessions, you can send an email or text, or call and leave a voicemail. I am often not immediately available; however, I will do my best to get back to you within 24 hours.

If You Are In Crisis

I do not provide 24-hour crisis services. If you are having a mental health emergency, call 988, go to your nearest hospital emergency room, or utilize one of the resources below.

  • Clackamas County Crisis Line: 503-655-8585
  • Clark County Crisis Line: 360-696-9560
